What is Search Engine Optimization-Why Does Your Website Need to be on First Page of Google Search?
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the process of getting your website listed on the first page of search engine result pages(SERP) in the organic or free listings.
Your SERPs is normally divided into 2 parts, the top part contains ads relevant to your search query and then we have the organic listings, listings of websites that search engines feel are most important and relevant to your search query.
Why is it important to get your website on the first page of SERP?
More than 90% of search engine users do not go beyond the first page of Google Search.
Why?
- Internet users are usually very impatient and lazy! Internet users want information quickly and they want it now!
- Google is God! Users believe that if search engines like Google list particular websites on the first page then these companies must be market leaders in that segment.
- 92% of buying decisions start with an online search! Do not forget that once the users type in keywords related to your products or services that you are offering, they have already shown a very keen interest to purchase. Thus it is very important that your website listing is visible to them on the first SERP.
- Listing is Free! Do not forget that these are free listings. Google or other search engines do not charge you any money to get your website listed in the organic search results.
There is a very funny anecdote that SEO people use:
How do you commit a perfect murder? If the body is never found then that is a perfect murder. So bury the body on the second page of Google search since nobody goes there!
Google Analytics has consistently shown that visitors to your website coming from organic search results are the ones who are most likely to become your customers.
Here is an example of one of my client’s Google Analytics report. This client’s website got listed on the first page of Google Search Engine Result Page.
You can see that users coming from organic search spend most time on the website, visit more pages on the website with the lowest bounce rates, which leads to more conversions. Also organic search recorded highest number of visitors during the week!
Conclusion
There are more than 75,000 searches that happen on Google every second of the day.
With more and more people using search engines to find information, it is very important to get your website featured on the first page of Google search.
